Live without wifi or mobiles?
Our previous post on the Lovell’s involvement with pulsars mentions the world’s largest fully steerable radio telescope, the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope (GBT). Located in West Virginia they have a legally enforced Radio quiet zone to protect it.
NO wifi. NO mobile phone reception. [nearest is an hour away!]. There’s just static on the radio.
The National Quiet Zone of West Virginia around the Green Bank telescope covers 13,000 sq miles. That ‘silence enables the observatory to detect energy in outer space that is equivalent to the energy emitted by a single snowflake hitting the ground’.
Clearly that won’t happen here but isn’t it time that Jodrell Bank Observatory, the world’s third largest steerable observatory, also has some legally enforced protection measures?
