Railway viaduct to close 13th-24th Feb

A reminder that the viaduct will be closed for 11 days for repairs 13th -24th Feb.  Granada Reports covered the story this evening, describing it as “one of Cheshire’s most iconic landmarks”.

But years of wet and cold have taken their toll and there is no functioning drainage which could lead to flooding of the line and degredation of the arches.  It can be seen that work has already started on the viaduct but the arches, built in 1841, have been exposed to the elements for 175 years and the improvements, costing £7 million in total, will help it to stand for another 125 years at least.

MP Fiona Bruce said that the inconvenience of the 11 days closure will bring “reliability and safety at the end”.

Passengers should check before travelling but there will be diversions via Macclesfield and a replacement bus service.
