October Appeal for 6 houses by 51 Main Rd

A year ago an application was refused for six houses in Goostrey on the land next to 51 Main Road, behind the two recently erected homes.  The developer is now appealing this decision at a Public Inquiry next month when Henderson Homes will be opposing the objections from Jodrell Bank Observatory, Cheshire East and Goostrey Parish Council.

The public are welcome to attend the Inquiry which runs on October 10th, 11th and 12th October at Congleton Town Hall.

JBO’s Professor Garrington states in his submission ‘Allowing this scheme would create an ever-worsening baseline of interference against which it would be difficult to control future development which also breached the international threshold.’

Bear Grylls’ Top Awards for Goostrey’s Scout Leaders

Prestigious scouting awards were presented to senior members of Goostrey Scout’s Executive at 1st Goostrey Scouts’ annual general meeting held in the brand new Scout Hut in Goostrey last week.

Stephen Buckley, Alderley District Scout Commissioner, presented the Scout Association’s “Award for Merit” to Group Scout Leader, David Giles in recognition of his leadership role in the community which has led to the creation of this new Scout Hut in Goostrey.

Mr Buckley said: “The Award for Merit is a National Award from the Scout Association – which recognises the huge contribution made by David Giles in turning a dream of a new Scout Hut and Youth Centre into reality. We all recognise that without his imagination, drive and leadership, we would not be in this fantastic new building, from which many thousands of young people will benefit over future generations.”

David said: “I am honoured and privileged to receive this award on behalf of my incredible Scouting team in Goostrey – and I wish to share it with the whole community which has supported us over the past three and a half years”.

Mr Buckley also presented Commissioner Commendations to the other team members in recognition of their outstanding commitment to the Scout Hut Project – Kit Tomkinson, Group Chairman, Beverley Giles, Group Treasurer, and members of the Scout Hut Build Team: Mark Nelson, Quartermaster, Colin Mottershead, Assistant Scout Leader, and Executive Members, Robin Williamson and Adrian Rose.

In addition, the following people were recognised by Chief Scout Service Awards for their contribution over many years: Neil Memmott, Scout Leader, Kit Tomkinson, Beverley Giles and Margaret Weeks.

David continued: “I am delighted that we have come so far in creating this new building, but we continue to need the community’s full support in raising the last £50,000 to repay the loan on the new building. May I also remind local businesses and organisations that we have wonderful meeting rooms available for hire at very reasonable rates! Whilst the main hall is in use every day from this month onwards by Goostrey PreSchool, and on most weekday evenings by Scouting and Guiding sections, the Ian Godfrey Meeting room and the other upstairs meeting space are modern light facilities, which are perfect for a wide range of meetings.

Summer fundraising boost

As the new term gets underway, 1st Goostrey Scouts are celebrating receiving a generous grant of nearly £2000 from Manchester Airport last month for furniture for the new Scout Hut and Youth Centre.

Group Scout Leader, David Giles said: “We are delighted to have been awarded a grant from the Manchester Airport Community Fund. This award of nearly £2,000 has allowed us to buy 16 tables which are now being used by young people in the main hall. The tables will be used every week by the Scouts, Cubs, Beavers and Guides, Brownies and Rainbows – and also by all the under 5s attending Goostrey Pre-School, who are moving to the Scout Hut and Youth Centre this month.”

This is the latest among a number of generous grants which have helped Goostrey Scouts to complete the new building. The other main donors include Goostrey Parish Council, the landfill funding body, WREN, Cheshire East Council and the Bernard Sunley Trust, which together have yielded £110,000 towards the £300,000 cost of building the new Scout Hut and Youth Centre. In addition, more than £150,000 has been contributed by local residents and businesses in a wide range of community fundraising events held over the last 3 years.

Summer Ball

David Giles as MC at the Summer Ball

A wonderful summer ball held this summer contributed more than £6,000 to the scout hut build fund – when the proceeds were shared equally with the PTA of Goostrey Primary School. More than 240 people attended the Ball, held on 15 July in a marquee at the idyllic location of Hollins Farm. After a delicious dinner, guests participated in a range of fundraising initiatives, including an auction, raffle and games, and then danced into the early hours to music provided by the “Joe Public” band.

David said “Goostrey Scouts and the PTA thank all the local businesses who sponsored, advertised or offered prizes for the Ball. We are also greatly endebted to the fantastic team of volunteers who worked unstintingly to organise the Ball – Richard Ashcroft, Bob Nicholson, Caroline Goodchild, Sue Mottershead and Beverley Giles.”

He continued: “We are very fortunate to have been given a loan to cover the outstanding build costs of the new Scout Hut and Youth, but we must continue our fundraising in order to repay it. If anyone can suggest other sources of grant funding, I hope they will contact me at
