Free historic herb garden workshop

A free afternoon learning herb gardening skills

with Barbara Depledge and Griselda Garner

 Saturday 30th March 2019

The Blackden Trust, CW4 8BY

2.00 – 4.00 pm

Barbara and Griselda have been maintaining the herb garden at The Blackden Trust together over the last three years. They are planning to replant it with the herbs that are listed in John Gerard’s   ‘Herball or Generall Historie of Plantes’ published in 1597.  Gerard was born in Nantwich in the same period as the building of The Old Medicine House.

Griselda will link some of the features of The Old Medicine House to the use of the herbs in the garden. Barbara, who is a former Chairman of the Herb Society UK, will give a short talk about the history and purpose of the herb garden and the plans for its future.  Then, drawing on her experience and expertise, she will give a hands-on workshop on sowing herb seeds and taking cuttings from established plants.  These plants will be grown in the herb beds.

No previous experience is required, just enthusiasm and a willingness to work with other volunteers.

All equipment will be provided.

Tea and cake will be served during the afternoon.

After this introductory session if you would then like to extend your knowledge and skills, we would welcome your help for couple of hours each month to create our John Gerard herb garden.

8 places are available.
