GOOSTREY ROSE DAY IS CANCELLED BUT VILLAGERS WILL STILL CELEBRATE

Although Goostrey Rose Day has been cancelled because of the Coronavirus, villagers will still celebrate on the big day – Saturday 27 June.

The organising committee, who have arranged Rose Day at Home, are encouraging villagers to put up  flags and bunting in the usual way and to mark the occasion with afternoon tea in their garden while listening to a special programme on Dane Sound Radio. Some of the craft competitions are still being organised and the team that usually make the refreshments are baking and delivering cakes for vulnerable people who must remain isolated because of Covid-19.

The special Dane Sound Radio programme will be broadcast via the  internet from 1pm to 4pm, coinciding with the times Rose Day usually takes place. The programme will include the thoughts of villagers and young people on past Rose Days, some of the history which dates back more than 100 years and a special link to the children of  Elizabethfontein School in South Africa who had been due to visit Goostrey this year.

The Rose Queen elect 12-year-old Cate Clayton will be making cakes and helping to deliver them while the Rose Bud Queen Rose Worsley and her attendants will be driven around Goostrey from 1pm

Chris Burgess, Chair of Rose Day, said: “We were all very disappointed when we had to cancel Rose Day this year, but we didn’t want the special day to pass without marking it some way.

“We hope that by celebrating Rose Day at Home people will be able to recreate the special atmosphere in their own garden and enjoy the occasion. If anyone knows of an isolated person who would appreciate receiving some cakes please get in touch

“We have set up a special Facebook page so entries to the children’s and craft competitions can be uploaded before being judged. The other competitions should be displayed in gardens to be judged by this year’s President Stuart Smallwood who will walk around the village.
